Android is gaining preference as the long-term choice of application developers

According to Appcelerator’s 2Q10 Mobile Developer Survey (which takes into account 2,733 Appcelerator application developers), iPhone is currently the most preferred platform by mobile application developers, followed by Android, Blackberry, Windows and Symbian.

  • As per the survey 90% of the respondents said they are more interested in I Phone Application development, followed by 84% for I Pad, 81% for Android phones and 62% for Android tablet (which is yet to be launched)

  • Mobile application developers have a higher preference for the iOS (which runs iPhone and iPad) mainly because developers consider iOS a big opportunity compared to other OS’s. Moreover, category-wise iOS is rated top in seven out of ten categories including best application store , best devices , biggest market for consumer and best near term outlook.
  • On the other hand, Android OS which is the most preferred after iOS, tops the remaining three categories including the most capable platform, most ‘open’ platform and best long term outlook. Most application developers believe that the Android OS has got higher potential (thus best long-term outlook), since it’s an open operating system, and is highly adaptable i.e. its not only capable of running phones but can also be used in tablets, TV’s, Set Top boxes, Cars and places where micro-computers are used, supporting more future application development opportunities.
  • One key fact that the survey highlights “Despite all of Apple’s success, developers see that the winner long-term will be the mobile operating system that has the most capabilities and flexibility in scenarios beyond phones.”

  • Though, iOS and Android OS are the most favored operating systems, there are reasons for certain reasons that do not favor the OS’s. In the survey 86% of application developers responded that they do not favor iOS as Apple has become too controlling. While Android OS is not favored by 61% of the application developers because they consider testing and developing across various Android platforms (different versions 2.0, 2.1 and soon to be launched 2.2) and devices (since android is offered across a variety of smartphones manufactured by HTC, Samsung, Motorola etc) is cost and time prohibitive.
