It wasn't voice search that was pertinent to the patent issue, it was the slide to unlock mechanism (which is extremely easy to rectify, and can be done in the settings menu). Android integrated voice search considerably before Apple and it makes one wonder why Google doesn't pursue the scorched earth policy that Apple has. My assumption is that the risk/reward ration of competing in courst is not worth it to Google management. Apple apparently differs.

I already got my Galaxy Nexus. It's a great device. Nothing comes close when it comes to value ($350 unlocked are you kidding me?!) But I am confused as to why Google would emphasize integrated voice search as a standout feature when this seems to be the main violation in banning the Nexus. I'm curious as to whether this could cause Google to change anything on Jelly Bean to avoid future injunctions. In the long run, I am not sure Google can win a patent war, now that Microsoft is in bed with Apple. Combined they wield over 20,000 patents to Google's couple thousand. I love Android but I don't see how they can win this in the long run.

Jelly Bean has already been released to the public domain. I doubt problems with the Nexus will amount to much. BTW the Nexus is still on sale right now at the Google Play store.

What MSFT is doing is borrowing a page from Google's playbook (most people assume they are taking after Apple). What has been done is the official lighting of a fire under the hardware OEM asses, just as Google did with their Nexus line of smart phones. Ample creativity and foresight is what Google injected into these phones and the OEMs had no choice but to show and prove or be moved to the side. The result? Android phones feature vastly superior hardware, cloud connectivity and GUI functionality, so much so that iOS 6 is just catching up to ICS from last year, as Android steps forward to the next iteration, Android 5 (jellybean). Competition is a wonderful thing, at least for the consumer and the markets.

Reggie, Your comments on Surface were as usual the opposite of superficial. As you suggest, MSFT are playing the long game here, and will influence the design, use , and capabilities of the tablet market. In the short game, not much success is expected or likely. The INTC model will not be available until Q1 of 2013, so the entire Christmas sales season will be missed. Acer has hi-res hi-performance 15-hour tablet out this month which already beats MSFT 's future ARM Surface in all 3 categories. It's likely that Asus and others will have more attractive options in the channels before Surface surfaces. However, if they can reshape the tablet direction to one in which their end-user software is more useful, it will still be a strategic win.
