Am I missing something because why is the best technology company in the world trading at 10x forward earnings (including $100bn of cash)? GOOG at 12.3x? The market hates tech here. AAPL has around 8% global market share for phones, they could easily see +20% comps here for the next 10 years just growing into this large market.

I don't agree. Google does not need QNX tech, they simply need to mature Android and increase the aggressiveness of the business model - both are things that they are currently doing.

Some of these guys border on a sickening fanatacism. I applaud Apple's ability to be able to manipulate clients, customers and investors up to a point, but it seems to have gone to far. Not too far from cult status. Scary...

I don't see how this shows where Steve Jobs had more of an effect on the world than Bill Gates. Gates' actions does tend to benefit him, agreed - but they also help many others. i have seen the effect of giving away free software and computers to school kids in NYC personally, and all I see are Apples being sold at an extreme premium. The question was a comparison between the two, not a critique of the effectiveness of the one.

When exactly is AAPL "going to get crushed"? And better yet, when is GOOG actually going to break out of this range it's been in for FIVE FREAKIN' YEARS! Google is the new Microsoft.

You're cheating. I personally don't think it's even close, and the answer is Bill Gates, and by along shot. Bill Gates has spent over $40B of his own money to verifiably help over 6 million people out of poverty and disease!! Steve Jobs oversaw a company to make a lot of pretty computers, glass phones and music players. The contribution to society and the world is incomparable!

You're right, I'm in a very narrow demographic, which values functionality above marketing. Zune HD was (and still is) a vastly better media player, but it was not as good an over mobile computer. I was in the market for a media player. I have been looking at these companies for quite some time and have gotten pretty good at recognizing trends. Two years ago I had this same discussion about RIM, and you see where they are now. This market moves very fast, and although the signs of a major paradigm shirt are not that hard to see, the vast majority of the populace are oblivious until after the fact. Apple's ecosystem is not that hard to switch from because most functionality available on Apple mobile products are available on Android, and often for free or much less. Apple is getting left behind in the functionality race, and pressure is being put on in cost. Apple would have been able to shrug this off if Google didn't create such awareness around its offerings, but now everybody knows what Android is. When the capability differences become mainstream, Apple will have to up investment (slash margins) are become a niche player. This is Apple's opporunity, for vendors such as Samsung and MMI should have a constant barrage of head to head competitions as ads and marketing campaigns to make Apple's shortcomings common knowledge, but they are (again) dropping the ball.

That would make for a most interesting competition, eh? MSFT/Nokia have the potential to really shake things up from a tech perspective, but the management of both companies appear to be moving to slow.

You put yourself in a very narrow demographic with that statement about the Zune. But you said the magic word: 'ecosystem'. That's what kept Windows at the top for well over a decade in spite of inferior technology. I learned a very long time ago not to pay attention to what I liked, because I'm a technologist. Instead, I pay attention to what my kids use because neither of them are that into technology per se. They love those iPods, iPhones and iPads, and so do their friends. Apple's margins aren't likely to come under extreme pressure for at least three years, due to the ecosystem and product quality that is more than adequate for the average customer.
