I am a private, entrepreneurial institutional investor with a background in financial engineering, insurance, corporate valuation and real estate. I received an email from a reporter yesterday inquiring into the solvency of insurers, which prompted me to release the my timely subscription content regarding the Hartford Insurance Group to the public. I grabbed a substantial bearish position in the Hartford Insurance Group in early October, and released a timely actionable intelligence note on October seventeenth, followed up by a significant amount of research. Kudos and big ups go out to my research team for doing a phenomenal job crystallizing my strategy.HIG has joined, or is close to joining the increasingly growing 200%+ return on cash investment club.

I picked up on the Hartford after investigating other life insurers, specifically Metropolitan, and found HIG to be the worst of the pack. Please click any and all thumbnails to enlarge to printer quality graphics.

Hartford's yields have spiked into junk territory (pretty much where they belong)

Hartford's CDS spreads have blown by a multiple of 4x to 8x

The Hartford Insurance Group is insolvent, as liabilities currently are the equivalent or more than its tangible assets, and thier core investment sector (the financial services industry) adds to those losses literally on a daily basis

This is a graphical depiction of Hartfords own reporting of net outflows - A literal "Run on the Bank" (well, actually insurer).

Previously booked future gains are unraveling rapidly

The general public now has access to the research since the Hartford has pretty much run its course for blog subscribers.

Here is a spreadsheet formally for professional subscribers detailing the exposuse of the top 200 Hartford debt holders that I was able to dig up on short notice - more work definitely needs to be done, along with a target on the top 10. Notice that the top 10 have significant exposure.

A few comments from my subscribers (positive vibes make me feel all mushyCry) :

  •   RM's record is even beyond astounding.  It's not right to try to minimize it.  I only wish I had stuck with some of his calls.  I got out much too early.  The magnitude of the downward movement in the market and in many of the companies mentioned here is amazing to me.  This has been a lifetime opportunity given to those wise enough to pay attention and take advantage.
  • You have to look at the entire record and realize how astounding RM has been. Just look at today's action the food sector stock is down 2.5% and the Dow is up over 100 points. Sure, in hindsight, anyone could have said the financials were going lower, but just listen to the fools on CNBC and you realize how spot-on RM has been.
  • Like Cramer and others before him who were considered market gurus, Reg has had an immediate reaction with his newest actionable item. The stock is down in the first few minutes 2% when the Dow is up 100+  (I'd like to believe that I'm a bit more empirical than Cramer, but thanks anyway)
  • MAC, HIG, the crummy banks, NAV and all of your other calls have doubled my very little brokerage are the best!
  • It's just that your timing is (or seems) so incredibly good that I couldn't really figure it out. I wish you all the best--if I thought I could do something to help you, believe me I would, given the sheer sense of perspective I've gotten from reading your blog.
  • i guess i'll just add my cheers to the list of people in awe.  damn Reggie, you are on fire right now man.  incredible to watch man, just like watching Michael Jordan back in the day.  seriously impressive.  hats off.
  • Boy it sure didn't take too long to make up the subscription price...Only regret is not buying more!  I screwed around pricing the puts and only bought what I thought would be 1/3-1/2 of my share since they are thinly traded.  Well 8 dollars later....
  • I feel like im living in one of the infomercials where they show ordinary people saying "i turned $5,000 into $100,000 in just three short months" -
Thanks reg , you did it again :)

Performance update

I threw together a performance update comparing my work with the top Wall Street banks, James Cramer, all of the hedge fund indices (representing about 2,600 hedge funds), and the major US and global market indices. This has been a stellar week for me in terms of performance, thus this chart is signficantly off to the downside, but I guess this is good for the sake of appearing conservative. See Performance update for the week of starting 11/17/2008.
